Power BI Masterclass: Dashboards & Reporting That Drive Decisions
Every organisation has Power BI licences; far fewer have reports anyone trusts. The difference is never the software — it is the discipline underneath: a sound data model and a designer who thinks like the reader. This masterclass teaches both.

This Power BI masterclass is a hands-on course for the people expected to turn organisational data into reporting that leadership actually uses. Over three days at the keyboard, participants build complete solutions end to end: connecting and shaping data with Power Query; designing the star-schema data model that determines whether everything downstream is easy or painful; writing the DAX measures that answer real business questions — totals, time intelligence, comparisons — without descending into formula archaeology; designing report pages that guide the eye instead of decorating the screen; and publishing through workspaces and apps with the refresh schedules, access controls and governance habits that keep a report trustworthy after launch. Every module is an exercise, not a demonstration. The programme is equally at home as an in-house Power BI course: private cohorts build their first governed reports on their organisation’s own data and leave with working assets, not just skills. Delivered in English and French across the Middle East, Africa and Asia — Dubai, Riyadh, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Singapore — and live online.
What you will do
Who attends
Business and data analysts building or inheriting Power BI reports; finance, operations and commercial teams replacing spreadsheet reporting; management information and BI teams standardising their practice; and power users nominated to become their department’s report builder. Solid Excel fluency is assumed; no prior Power BI or DAX experience is required. Private in-house cohorts — a whole MI team, a finance function — get the added benefit of building on their own data model from day one.
Programme agenda
Built for the decisions no textbook prepares you for
I.From data to model
- The Power BI workflow: where Desktop, the service and the data each live
- Power Query in earnest: connecting, cleaning and shaping repeatably
- Query folding, refresh and the habits that keep imports fast
II.The data model — the decision that decides everything
- Star schemas: facts, dimensions and why flat tables eventually punish you
- Relationships, cardinality and filter direction without mystery
- Date tables and the foundations of time intelligence
III.DAX fundamentals that stick
- Measures versus columns — and why the distinction matters so much
- Filter context: the one concept that unlocks the rest of DAX
- Time intelligence: year-to-date, prior period and growth done correctly
IV.Visual design for decisions
- Choosing visuals by the question they answer, not the gallery they came from
- Page architecture: overview first, drill-down on demand, detail last
- Interactions, bookmarks and tooltips that help rather than dazzle
V.Distribution & governance
- Workspaces, apps and audiences: who sees what, and how it gets to them
- Refresh schedules, gateways and row-level security in practice
- Certified datasets, naming and the governance that prevents report sprawl
VI.The build clinic
- A complete report built end to end from a realistic multi-table dataset
- Peer review against a report quality checklist — model, measures, design
- Your deployment plan: the first three reports to build back at work
Frequently asked
Do I need prior Power BI or DAX experience?
No. The masterclass assumes solid Excel fluency but no previous Power BI or DAX experience. Over three days it builds the full craft from first import: shaping data with Power Query, designing a star-schema model, writing DAX measures, designing report pages and publishing with governance. Every module is a hands-on exercise rather than a demonstration.
What will I be able to build after the course?
Complete, governed Power BI solutions end to end: repeatable Power Query transformations, a sound star-schema data model, DAX measures for totals, comparisons and time intelligence, report pages designed for the reader, and distribution through workspaces and apps with refresh schedules and row-level security. In the final clinic, each participant builds a full report from a realistic multi-table dataset.
Can we run the masterclass in-house on our own data?
Yes — the programme is equally at home as a private in-house Power BI course, tailored to the institution. Private cohorts — a whole MI team, a finance function — build their first governed reports on their organisation’s own data model from day one and leave with working assets, not just skills. In-house delivery is available in English or French.
How do I get dates and fees?
Sessions run on a rolling calendar across the Middle East, Africa and Asia — including Dubai, Riyadh, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Singapore — and live online, with dates confirmed on request. Fees are provided by quotation on enquiry, for open-enrolment places and private in-house editions alike. The course is delivered in English and French.
