Finance for Insurance Professionals Masterclass

Reading any company’s accounts through 14 key ratios — and mastering the financial dynamics unique to insurance, from loss reserving to underwriting-year data.

The programme

Insurance professionals make daily judgements that hinge on financial statements — yet many have never been taught to read them like an analyst. This course has two overriding aims: to build a working grasp of the financial dynamics of insurance, and to enable participants to read the accounts of any company using 14 key financial ratios. Both modules rest on an Introduction to Accounts that puts foundations in place first, and the emphasis throughout is practical application — exercises and group work reinforce every concept. The cohort works through the insurance-specific balance sheet, actuarial loss reserving and the performance measures that matter: loss ratios, operating profit and ROE.

What you will do

Read any company’s accounts using 14 key financial ratios, spanning profitability, efficiency, liquidity and solvency.

Apply actuarial methods for loss reserving at a practical working level.
Distinguish financial year, accident year and underwriting year perspectives on the same data.
Measure insurance performance through loss ratios, operating profit and ROE.
