Structural Steel Design for Industrial Facilities: Pipe Racks, Supports & Platforms

Industrial steel is designed twice — once on paper and once by the loads that actually arrive — good design makes both the same structure.

The programme

The secondary steel of an industrial facility — racks, supports, platforms, ladders — carries most of its daily loads and receives the least design attention. This programme trains that design properly: load determination including piping loads, thermal cases and equipment reactions; member and connection design to the governing codes; pipe rack layout and expansion strategy; platforms, stairs and ladders to access and safety standards; and the constructability and inspection realities that separate drawings from structures. Worked examples throughout.

What you will do

Determine design loads: piping, thermal, equipment, environmental
Design members and connections to the governing steel codes
Lay out pipe racks with a coherent expansion and support strategy
Detail platforms, stairs and ladders to access and safety standards

Who attends

Structural and civil engineers in industrial projects; piping engineers who interface with steel; design office leads; site engineers reviewing steel packages.

Cohorts bring together board members, executives and the rising leaders behind them — kept deliberately small, so every seat is a peer’s.

Programme agenda

Built for the decisions no textbook prepares you for

I.Loads and cases
  • Piping loads: sustained, thermal, occasional — and friction nobody models
  • Equipment reactions, blast and wind: the governing combinations
  • Deflection and vibration limits that protect the piping, not just the steel
II.Design and detailing
  • Members and connections: economy inside the code
  • Pipe racks: bays, bracing, expansion loops and anchor strategy
  • Platforms, stairs, ladders: access standards applied, not approximated
III.From drawing to structure
  • Constructability: tolerances, transport, erection sequence
  • Fabrication and welding quality: what to specify, what to inspect
  • Modifications in service: the added load nobody calculated

Frequently asked

Who is the industrial structural steel design course for?

It is aimed at structural and civil engineers on industrial projects, piping engineers who interface with steel, design office leads, and site engineers reviewing steel packages. The programme runs on worked examples throughout, so it suits engineers who want the design practised, not just described.

Which structures and load cases does the course cover?

The focus is the secondary steel that carries the plant: pipe racks, shelters, pipe supports, platforms, stairs and ladders. Load determination covers piping loads — sustained, thermal and occasional — plus equipment reactions, blast and wind, with member and connection design to the governing codes and deflection limits that protect the piping as well as the steel.

Is the course available in-house and in French?

Yes. BIZENIUS delivers the programme in English and French, and an in-house edition can be tailored to your project’s codes and typical structures. Sessions run on a rolling calendar with dates confirmed on request; fees and quotations are provided on enquiry.
