The dossier
The brief
An award-winning bank had just closed the strongest year in its history — record growth, a credit book whose quality had led its market three years running. Yet SME lending decisions still took days to weeks while a rival built same-day digital credit, most of the country’s borrowers were invisible to scoring built on formal payslips, and rural enterprise sat beyond a thin branch network. Leadership did not want another opinion. It wanted evidence: where the bank actually stood against every rival, which gaps were costing growth, and what to do about each — in what order.
The work
BIZENIUS built the intelligence base the strategy was missing: the national macro and SME context assembled from primary sources, a line-by-line benchmark of the bank against four rivals on audited full-year numbers, and two continental best-practice models for what winning SME banking looks like. The analysis distilled to five critical gaps — credit turnaround speed, rural reach, alternative credit scoring built on mobile-money and pension-contribution data, agri value-chain credit, and non-funded income captured with every credit decision — each paired with a specific, dated fix, sequenced on a three-horizon plan, including a first-mover route into a new pension-backed SME growth fund.
What stands
The bank’s credit and business-banking teams now carry the year as one argument — what the credit turnaround must become, where the reach investment goes, who moves first on the new capital pool — every line traceable to numbers nobody in the room disputes. The name is confidential. The method is not.
