NEBOSH courses in the Gulf: which certificate, how it is assessed, where we deliver

What a NEBOSH qualification is#

NEBOSH — the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health — is an independent examining board and awarding body with charitable status, formed in 1979. It does not teach. It sets the syllabus, writes and marks the assessments, and accredits the Learning Partners who deliver the teaching. That separation is the reason a NEBOSH certificate travels: an employer in Riyadh, Lagos or Singapore reads the same qualification, assessed to the same standard, whoever taught the course.

The international certificates are written against international standards and management-system practice rather than the law of one jurisdiction, which is what makes them usable across the GCC, Africa and Asia without a local rewrite.

The six NEBOSH titles BIZENIUS delivers#

• **International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (IGC)** — the general qualification for managers, supervisors and HSE officers. Two units: IG1, a scenario-based open-book examination with a closing interview, and IG2, a practical risk assessment of your own workplace. Minimum 63 taught hours plus about 40 hours of private study.
• **International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety** — one unit, IOG1, assessed by a two-hour written examination of ten short-answer and one long-answer question. Minimum 34 taught hours. For managers, supervisors and advisers with safety responsibility in oil and gas.
• **HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management** — developed with Great Britain’s regulator, the Health and Safety Executive. Assessed by an online multiple-choice examination. Minimum 28 taught hours. For the process industries: oil and gas, chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals.
• **Certificate in Fire Safety** — two units: FSC1, a digital open-book examination, and FSC2, a fire risk assessment of a real workplace. Minimum 28 taught hours. For those who own fire safety in low- to medium-risk workplaces.
• **HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation** — one day, ending in a practical assessment: an evidence pack, three recorded witness interviews, and an action plan to prevent recurrence.
• **Environmental Management Certificate (EMC)** — NEBOSH’s current environmental qualification, which replaced the withdrawn Certificate in Environmental Management. Two units: EMC1, an open-book examination within a 24-hour window, and EMC2, a practical assessment of environmental aspects and impacts at your own workplace. 34 taught hours. Built around ISO 14001.

Which one to take#

Start from the responsibility you hold, not the sector you are in. A supervisor, site manager or newly appointed HSE officer who has never held a formal safety qualification takes the IGC; it is the qualification most of the others assume you already have. Someone whose job is the safety of hydrocarbon operations adds the Oil and Gas certificate. Someone accountable for loss of containment in a plant — process, chemicals, pharmaceuticals — takes Process Safety Management. The person who signs the fire risk assessment takes the fire certificate. The one-day incident investigation course is for anyone expected to investigate a non-complex incident unaided, which in practice means every line supervisor.

The IGC is the qualification the others assume you already hold.

How NEBOSH assessments work#

Three formats recur across the family. The open-book examination gives you a scenario and a fixed window to submit a written paper; for the IGC it is followed by a short closing interview to confirm the work is your own. The practical assessment is done on a real workplace — a risk assessment for the IGC, a fire risk assessment for the fire certificate — and is marked on whether the hazards you found and the controls you proposed would stand up on site. The written or multiple-choice examination is timed and sat under supervision. In every case NEBOSH, not the Learning Partner, marks the work and issues the result.

Plan the study time NEBOSH recommends as a floor, not a target: 63 taught hours for the IGC, 34 for Oil and Gas, 28 for Process Safety Management and Fire Safety, 34 for the Environmental Management Certificate, each with a further 20 to 40 hours of private reading.

Where we deliver in the Gulf#

Open-enrolment cohorts run on a rolling calendar in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Doha, Muscat, Manama and Kuwait City, with dates confirmed on request. Every title is also run live online for delegates who cannot travel, and in-house at your own site anywhere in the GCC — the usual choice when an employer puts a whole supervisory team through the IGC at once. Teaching is in English; the IGC and the incident investigation course are also available in French for francophone Africa.
