Change Management in Practice: Adoption, Communication & Resistance

Projects do not deliver benefits — adopted changes do. The gap between "we went live" and "people work differently" is where transformations quietly die, and closing that gap is a craft, not a communications afterthought — this programme teaches the craft.

The programme

Every new system, process or structure arrives with the same assumption: people will use it. Most transformations prove otherwise — not because change is difficult, but because adoption was nobody’s job. This three-day programme trains the people whose job it is — practitioner-level, the companion to executive change leadership, doing rather than sponsoring. Participants build the toolkit on a change they run: stakeholder mapping beyond power grids to who loses what; impact analysis by role, answering the question people ask — what does this mean for me; planning by audience, channel and moment, not newsletter; resistance handling treating objection as data about the design; and adoption measurement — usage, proficiency, outcomes tracked past go-live. A closing module anchors change in management routines and reinforcement. It runs best in-house for change agents, project teams and line managers of a live transformation, who leave with a shared, working change plan. Delivered in English and French across the Middle East and Africa — Dubai, Riyadh, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos — and live online.

What you will do

Map stakeholders beyond the power grid — who gains, who loses, who decides and who merely signs.
Analyse change impact role by role — so every message answers "what does this mean for me".
Build a communication plan by audience, channel and moment — not a newsletter schedule.
Handle resistance as information — surface it early, read what it says about the change, and respond without escalation.
Measure adoption with usage, proficiency and outcome indicators — and act on the gaps they reveal.
Sustain the change after the project closes — reinforcement, management routines and the moment support can stand down.

Who attends

Change practitioners, business-change leads and change-network coordinators; project and programme managers who own adoption as well as delivery; HR business partners and internal communication professionals supporting transformations; process excellence and IT teams whose improvements keep meeting resistance; and line managers carrying a change into their own teams. It is practitioner-level by design — executives seeking the strategic sponsorship perspective are better served by our executive change leadership programme — and it is frequently commissioned in-house for the full change network of a live transformation.

Cohorts bring together board members, executives and the rising leaders behind them — kept deliberately small, so every seat is a peer’s.

Programme agenda

Built for the decisions no textbook prepares you for

I.The adoption gap
  • Why delivered is not adopted: where transformation benefits actually leak away
  • The change curve in working life: what people predictably feel, and when
  • The practitioner’s remit: what change management owns, influences and merely watches
II.Stakeholder mapping & impact analysis
  • Beyond the power–interest grid: gains, losses and the informal influencers
  • Impact analysis by role: what changes in the daily work, precisely
  • Sponsors, agents and the line: building the coalition that carries the change
III.Communication that lands
  • Audience, message, messenger, channel, moment — the planning grid worked in full
  • Answering "what does this mean for me" before anything else
  • Two-way channels: listening mechanisms that catch trouble while it is still cheap
IV.Working with resistance
  • Reading resistance as data: what the objection says about the change design
  • Conversations that lower the temperature: acknowledging loss without abandoning the change
  • When resistance is right: feeding legitimate objections back into the design
V.Measuring adoption
  • Usage, proficiency and outcome indicators — and what each can and cannot tell you
  • Adoption dashboards and the cadence of measurement after go-live
  • Acting on the gaps: targeted reinforcement instead of another all-staff email
VI.Sustaining the change — and the plan you take home
  • Reinforcement: management routines, recognition and the systems that must agree with the change
  • Transferring ownership to the line and standing down the change team
  • The change plan clinic: your own initiative, planned end to end and peer-reviewed

Frequently asked

Is this programme for executives or for practitioners?

It is deliberately practitioner-level: for change practitioners, project and programme managers, HR business partners, internal communicators and line managers who do the daily work of adoption. Executives seeking the strategic sponsorship perspective are better served by our executive change leadership programme — the two are designed as companions.

Do participants work on a real change during the programme?

Yes. The toolkit is built on a change each participant actually runs: stakeholder maps, role-by-role impact analysis, a communication plan by audience, channel and moment, and adoption measures. The closing clinic has your own initiative planned end to end and peer-reviewed before you leave.

How does the programme treat resistance to change?

As information rather than insubordination. You learn to surface resistance early, read what an objection says about the change design, and hold conversations that acknowledge loss without abandoning the change — including recognising when resistance is right and feeding legitimate objections back into the design.

Can it be commissioned in-house for our transformation?

Yes — it is frequently run for the full change network of a live transformation: change agents, project teams and line managers together, in an edition tailored to your institution, leaving with one shared, working change plan. Delivered in English and French on a rolling calendar; dates and fees on enquiry.

Who teaches this

Practitioners, not presenters.

Led by people who have held the seat, or advised those who do: former and serving chief officers, board members and committee chairs, and senior consultants who have sat beside executive committees through transformations, successions and crises. They teach from decisions they carried, in rooms kept small enough for the cohort’s own situations to be worked.

What the bench brings

  • Digital and business strategy
  • Enterprise-wide transformation programmes
  • Business cases, valuation and financial strategy
  • Operating models and technology road-mapping
  • Leading, motivating and managing teams
  • Change management and cultural change

Where they have practised

Current and former practitioners — people who hold the seat today alongside those who have held it.

Sectors: Banking & financial services · Professional services · Manufacturing & industry · Technology & fintech

Regions: Africa · the Middle East · Europe · Asia · the Americas

How they teach

  • Role plays and filmed practice with senior feedback
  • Case work from executive and board situations
  • Peer coaching and structured group discussion
  • Self-assessment instruments and reflection
  • A personal leadership action plan

Cohorts are kept small so every exercise is worked on the participants’ own situations — in person or live virtual.
