Concrete Structures: Design, Inspection, Repair & Maintenance

Concrete does not fail suddenly — it fails on a schedule announced years in advance to anyone trained to read it.

The programme

Most of the world’s industrial concrete is past mid-life, and the bill for ignoring it compounds. This programme covers the structure’s whole life: design decisions that buy durability — cover, mix, detailing for the real exposure; inspection and condition assessment from visual survey to testing, with deterioration mechanisms (carbonation, chlorides, ASR, sulphates) diagnosed rather than guessed; repair selection matched to cause, not symptom; and the maintenance regime that converts a deteriorating asset into a managed one. Field-oriented, with assessment casework on real structures.

What you will do

Design and detail concrete for its real exposure and design life
Run condition assessments from visual survey to structured testing
Diagnose deterioration mechanisms before prescribing the repair
Select and specify repairs that treat cause, not symptom

Who attends

Civil and structural engineers; facilities and asset integrity teams; inspection and maintenance engineers; project engineers managing repair contracts.

Cohorts bring together board members, executives and the rising leaders behind them — kept deliberately small, so every seat is a peer’s.

Programme agenda

Built for the decisions no textbook prepares you for

I.Designed to last
  • Durability by design: cover, mix, crack control for the exposure class
  • Detailing that decides service life: joints, drainage, reinforcement
  • The design review that prevents the repair contract
II.Reading the structure
  • Inspection: survey methods, defect mapping, prioritisation
  • Deterioration mechanisms: carbonation, chlorides, ASR, sulphates
  • Testing: what each method proves, and what it cannot
III.Repair and manage
  • Repair selection: patch, protect, strengthen — matched to cause
  • Specification and workmanship: why repairs fail early
  • The maintenance regime: monitoring, budgets, the managed asset

Frequently asked

Do the programmes cover the energy transition as well as conventional operations?

Both. The curriculum spans oil and gas operations, drilling project and risk management, ESG, and the global energy transition — including how conventional operators finance and sequence the shift. Participants leave able to weigh transition decisions with the same rigour they apply to an operating asset.

Is project finance for energy and infrastructure covered?

Yes — advanced project finance analysis and modelling, PPP and infrastructure finance, and the financing of oil, gas and mining projects all sit in the curriculum. Participants leave able to build and stress a project-finance model and defend the structure to lenders and boards.

How do we enrol a team on an energy programme?

Send an enquiry or brochure request from the programme page; a senior practitioner responds within one business day with the brochure and the options for your group. Team cohorts are arranged through that proposal — including a private, in-house edition when the whole unit should train together.

Who typically attends the energy and utilities programmes?

Engineers, operations managers, project and commercial leaders, and HSE and finance professionals from oil and gas, power, utilities and mining. Regulators and national companies attend alongside private operators, which sharpens the discussion on both sides.
