Managing Efficient Shutdowns and Turnarounds Masterclass

Unplanned overruns on shutdowns are a management failure, not bad luck — strategy, lead-time structure, checklists and execution discipline for turnarounds that finish on budget.

The programme

Industry is full of shutdowns that blew their budgets and schedules — and almost none of them failed at execution; they failed at planning. Turnarounds and outages in the process plant environment are complex, and when they are not properly planned, managed and controlled, the bill arrives as budget overruns, schedule delays and damage to customers. This workshop gives participants a practical grounding in safe and effective shutdown execution management, applying project management principles to the plant environment. It comes with specific checklists, procedures, strategies and outside resources to improve your current shutdown planning, plus worked examples of the major points. The cohort works through the full cycle, from turnaround strategy and planning lead time to execution, close-out and evaluation.

What you will do

Develop a shutdown and turnaround strategy, with the management plan, work plans, resource plans and budget behind it.
Structure the shutdown planning lead time so nothing critical is discovered late.
Manage risk and safety through every stage of the shutdown process.
Evaluate the effectiveness of your current shutdown effort against proven turnaround management techniques.
Cut unnecessary cost by planning, executing and closing the shutdown properly, using checklists of everything to consider and when.
Clarify every team member’s role in a successful turnaround, and build an action plan to improve your own technique.

  • Production supervisors and storeroom managers

Cohorts bring together board members, executives and the rising leaders behind them — kept deliberately small, so every seat is a peer’s.
