NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate (EMC) — environmental management systems, aspects and impacts, emissions, waste and energy, assessed by an open-book exam and a workplace practical, delivered with a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner.

The programme

Environmental performance is now a licence-to-operate question: a manager who cannot show how emissions, waste, water and energy are controlled exposes the organisation to regulators, lenders and insurers. The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate (EMC) is NEBOSH’s current environmental qualification — it replaced the withdrawn Certificate in Environmental Management — and is written to be globally relevant, with an environmental management system built on the requirements of ISO 14001 at its core. The syllabus covers the ethical, legal and financial case for environmental management; management systems; aspects and impacts; emergency planning; emissions to air, noise and water contamination; waste and land use; and energy efficiency. Assessment is in two units: EMC1, an open-book examination completed within a 24-hour window, and EMC2, a practical assessment of environmental aspects and impacts at your own workplace. NEBOSH recommends 34 taught hours and about 25 hours of private study. BIZENIUS delivers the EMC in English with a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner; cohorts run in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha, Lagos, Nairobi and live online, and in-house at your site.

What you will do

Make the case for environmental management in ethical, legal and financial terms, linked to sustainability and corporate responsibility.
Work within an environmental management system built on ISO 14001 and contribute to continual improvement.
Assess environmental aspects and impacts, determine the significant ones and evaluate the controls in place — the skill Unit EMC2 tests.
Plan for environmental emergencies and describe suitable preparation and response.
Control noise, air and water pollution by identifying sources and proposing proportionate measures.
Manage waste and energy responsibly — waste types, outlets and contaminated land, the waste hierarchy, energy sources and efficiency.

Who attends

  • Managers with environmental responsibilities as part of their role
  • HSE staff broadening into environmental management
  • Supervisors and worker representatives on environmental matters
  • Anyone preparing to run or improve an ISO 14001-based system

Cohorts bring together board members, executives and the rising leaders behind them — kept deliberately small, so every seat is a peer’s.

Programme agenda

II.Aspects, impacts and emergencies (elements 3–4)
  • Types of environmental impact and sources of environmental information
  • Environmental aspect and impact assessment — the method Unit EMC2 is built on
  • Environmental emergency planning, preparation and response
III.Emissions, noise and water (elements 5–7)
  • Control of emissions to air
  • Control of environmental noise
  • Control of contamination of water sources
IV.Waste, land, energy and the assessments (elements 8–9)
  • Control of waste and land use — waste types, outlets, contaminated land and the waste hierarchy
  • Sources and use of energy, and energy efficiency
  • Preparing for Unit EMC1 (open-book examination) and Unit EMC2 (workplace practical)

Frequently asked

Is this an accredited NEBOSH qualification?

Yes. BIZENIUS delivers the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate in collaboration with ACT Associates Ltd, a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner, so you study with an accredited centre and NEBOSH itself sets and marks both units.

How is the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate assessed?

Two units. Unit EMC1 (Environmental management) is an open-book examination: NEBOSH allows about five hours, within a 24-hour window in which you download the paper and upload your answers, so it can be taken remotely. Unit EMC2 (Assessing environmental aspects and associated impacts) is a practical assessment carried out at your own workplace, for which NEBOSH allows three hours, and submitted within 14 days of the examination date. A pass in both units is required; the grade (Pass, Credit or Distinction) comes from EMC1.

How does this differ from the old NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management?

NEBOSH withdrew the Certificate in Environmental Management, which was assessed by a single two-hour written examination (Unit EC1). Its replacement, the Environmental Management Certificate, keeps the same level and subject but is assessed by an open-book examination plus a workplace practical, and is built around ISO 14001. Employers who asked for “the NEBOSH environmental certificate” are asking for this one.

How long does the EMC take, and is it available in-house?

NEBOSH recommends 34 taught hours, about 25 hours of private study and 8 hours for the assessments, which in a classroom cohort is one working week followed by the EMC1 examination and the EMC2 workplace practical. Open cohorts run on a rolling calendar with dates confirmed on request; in-house editions are available at your site, and fees are quoted on enquiry.

Who teaches this

Practitioners, not presenters.

Led by health, safety and environment professionals who have held HSE accountability on operating sites and hold the recognised international safety qualifications they teach towards. They bring the incidents, audits and turnarounds they have managed into the room, not a slide deck about them.

What the bench brings

  • HSE management systems and policy formulation
  • Recognised international safety certificates
  • Job hazard analysis, risk assessment and permit-to-work
  • Offshore and construction safety
  • Environmental management systems
  • HSE policy and integrated management systems

Where they have practised

Current and former practitioners — people who hold the seat today alongside those who have held it.

Sectors: Manufacturing & industry · Oil & gas · Telecom · Government & public sector

Regions: the Middle East · Europe · Asia

How they teach

  • Incident and emergency scenario exercises
  • Site-based exercises and walk-through audits
  • Group risk assessments on real scenarios
  • Exam-style knowledge checks and quizzes
  • A personal safety action plan

Cohorts are kept small so every exercise is worked on the participants’ own situations — in person or live virtual.
